The Black Swans Under 14s produced their best result on record at Victoria Park on Saturday when they scored an historic first ever win.
Playing the Bathurst Bushrangers at Victoria Park in their round three game, the junior Black Swans piled on 14.15.99 to score a 90-point victory, much to the delight of all connected with the club.
In the best playing conditions for the day’s program, the Under 14s hit the ground running and led at the end of every quarter.
Good hand ball and kicks to position led to the home side taking a four goal lead to the first break and eight goals to the half time break.
A number of new recruits impressed on the day with Daniel James and Nathan Gilius showing they have a future in the sport.
James looks a ready made goal kicker who also has good tackling techniques while Gilius has a great left side kick, which he used to great advantage even though he was giving away height and mobility to his opposite number.
Other youngsters to impress were Brenday Hayes and Keegan Hayes, Tayla Crockett while Jae Marskell and Mitchell Metcraft are proving valuable players.
The Hayes brothers have blossomed this season and both are reading the game well and gaining plenty of possession while Marskell brings both size and strength to the side.
Crockett, who will have a tilt at any ball game, is a newcomer to AFL this season and her fearless tackling, strong marking and great kicks is proving a real asset in the forward line.
The Under 17s fielded a team including five players from the Under14s but were unable to trouble the Bushrangers who ran out winners by 17.17.119 to 1.3.9.
In the reserve grade game the Black Swans held possession for 66 per cent of the game but were unable to reel in the 5.2.32 to 0.0.0 lead at half time but then held the visitors scoreless in the back half of the game.
Coach Greg Dowker said the fact that the Black Swans were able to have possession for the best part of the game was encouraging.
“Our goal kicking let us down as we only took the major points on three of 14 attempts at the uprights,” Dowker said.
“Our goal kickers were more intent on running the ball and blazing away, rather than steadying themselves before taking a shot for six points.
“However, it is something that we will work on at training this week.”
Dowker said a number of new players to the AFL ranks this season are proving valuable players.
“We have a number of players from other codes who are fitting in nicely,” he said.
“On Saturday Daniel Watters had his first game.
“His work at the centre tap in winning the lions share of the ball was outstanding and as a result our centre clearances were very good.
“Our back line was very good and included a number of new faces in Aaron Nolan and Carlos Rahme, Nat Hiley, Paul Baguley, Brad Hickey, Brenton Clarkson and Matt McKenzie.”
Goal scorers for the Black Swans were Brendan Balchin, Daniel Rayner and Mark O’Keefe, who has been out of the game since breaking a foot in the semi finals in 2005.
