The Mudgee Wolves First XI blasted their way to an 8-2 win over Bathurst 75s in Bathurst District Soccer played at Bathurst on Sunday.
In the final round before the start of the final series, the Mudgee team ensured there would be no doubt as to who would be minor premiers for the 2008 season.
Mudgee were always in control as Dean Riley, Daryl Blamire, Callum Ruming and Nazir Abdelgalil all netted twice for the game.
With regular captain Craig Mitchell out injured on Sunday, Jason Payne was stand-in captain and said he was pleased with the performance.
‘While Bathurst 75s are not in the finals, it was a good hit out on Sunday and we played some really good football,” Payne said.
“The way we played we deserved to win by a big margin and the fact that we did augers well for the finals.”
Sunday’s win was an impressive performance and the Wolves will now take their place against Bathurst City Colts in the major semi final to be played at Bathurst this Sunday.
Mudgee has played Colts three times this season for two drawn games when playing away but at Glen Willow Mudgee was able to win and therefore has the confidence edge over the Colts team.
Mitchell said yesterday that at this stage only Michael Woods is on the injured list, leaving the Wolves with a strong line up for this Sunday.
The Wolves will go straight to the September 21 grand final if they win this Sunday, but a loss will mean they play in the elimination final on September 14.
The squad for Sunday is: Craig Mitchell (capt), Tom Plummer, Jason Payne, Andrew Kiepert, Helmut Eichner, Ryan Leonard, Callum Ruming, Jesse Tomlinson, Dean Riley, Brendan Tobin, Anthony Foley, Toby Wheeler, Nazir Abdegalil.
In the third grade competition the Wolves are awaiting results of a countback to see if they have made it to the elimination semi final this Sunday even though they were beaten last weekend.
In the Women’s competition the Wolves won on forfeit last weekend and finished second on the premiership ladder and will now go into the major semi final this Sunday.
Women’s squad for Sunday: Anne McKay, Amy Holland, Kim Sharp, Tayla Crockett, Catheryne Palmer, Hana Newbury, Melissa Gibbins, Jessica Clarkson, Gabrielle Lane, Jessica Sharp, Adriana Lane, Kristin Flack, Lauren Wills, Tammy Lumsden.
Note: in Bathurst District Soccer all games in the finals are played at Bathurst’s Proctor Park soccer complex.
